1. Kiss-plates are a useful way of demonstrating that different types of bacteria live in different habitats
2. The mouth has a very different population of bacteria to the skin
3. The predominant bacteria in the mouth are streptococci, many of which are alpha-haemolytic
4. The bacterial population of the mouth is strongly selected for by oral conditions, especially saliva
5. Different selection pressures apply on the skin which allow staphylococci to thrive
